A V-ring is a one-piece rubber seal that stretches onto the shaft and seals axially against a flat counterface — usually the side of a bearing housing. It's simple, cheap and one of the best ways to keep contaminants out of a bearing.
Common uses
- 1Protecting bearings on electric motors, fans and blowers from dust and splash
- 2Sealing gearbox and pump shafts against external dirt and water
- 3Standard fitment on agricultural equipment — combines, tractors, conveyors
- 4Secondary protection in front of an oil seal in harsh environments
Advantages
- No housing bore needed — stretch-fits directly onto the shaft
- All-rubber construction tolerates shaft misalignment and runout well
- Acts as a flinger at speed — actively throws contaminants away
- Cheap, easy to fit by hand and easy to replace in service
Disadvantages
- Designed for low pressure only — not a substitute for an oil seal
- Effectiveness drops if the counterface is rough, painted or rusty
- Can walk along the shaft at very high speeds if undersized
- NBR rubber degrades quickly in heat, ozone or aggressive chemicals
The bottom line
Fit a V-ring wherever a bearing sees dust, splash or washdown — it's the cheapest insurance you can buy for a bearing. Always check the counterface is smooth and clean before installing.
