When an obsolete machine needs an odd-size O-ring at 9 PM on a Friday, cord stock is the answer. You cut a length, glue or vulcanise the ends, and you have a custom O-ring in minutes.
Common uses
- 1One-off repairs on old or imported equipment with non-standard grooves
- 2Very large diameters where moulded O-rings are expensive or unavailable
- 3Prototype and workshop use where the exact size isn't known yet
- 4Sealing flat covers, inspection plates and custom flanges
Advantages
- One spool covers an unlimited range of circumferences
- Available in all common compounds (NBR, EPDM, FKM, silicone)
- Massively reduces downtime when a moulded O-ring would take days to source
- Cheap to keep on the shelf in a handful of diameters
Disadvantages
- The joint is the weak point — pressure ratings drop vs a moulded O-ring
- Not recommended for high-pressure hydraulics or critical safety joints
- Requires a clean cut and proper glue/vulcaniser for a reliable bond
- Best treated as a temporary fix until a moulded part arrives
The bottom line
Keep a small range of cord on the shelf — it pays for itself the first time it gets a machine back into production. Just plan to swap it for a moulded ring on the next scheduled service.
